Yesterday I needed to import a lot of contacts in Gmail in order to create a group.
There is a simple and fast way to do this almost automatically, provided that you already have, or at least know how to create, a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file of contacts.

Here is the CSV layout:

Name,E-mail,Notes,Section 1 - Description,Section 1 - Email,Section 1 - IM,Section 1 - Phone,Section 1 - Mobile,Section 1 - Pager,Section 1 - Fax,Section 1 - Company,Section 1 - Title,Section 1 - Other,Section 1 - Address,Section 2 - Description,Section 2 - Email,Section 2 - IM,Section 2 - Phone,Section 2 - Mobile,Section 2 - Pager,Section 2 - Fax,Section 2 - Company,Section 2 - Title,Section 2 - Other,Section 2 - Address
THIS IS THE NAME OF YOUR CONTACT,contactemail@something.com,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Note that you can fill in all the fields you want.
To add a new contact, add it in a new line.
The important thing is that the number of commas matches the number of headers of the first row.

Then go to your Gmail account and:

  • Click on “Contacts”.
  • Click on “Import” in the upper right side of the webpage.
  • Click on “Browse” and select your CSV file.
  • Tick the box “Also add these imported contacts to:” and select the group you want to add your contacts to.

Done! :D
